PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — In a bold and pointed statement released via social media, Techo Hun Sen, former Prime Minister and current Senate President of Cambodia, reaffirmed the nation's unwavering position on the contentious Cambodia-Thailand border issue, while also addressing the ongoing ceasefire in the bilateral conflict.
Refusing to be drawn into further dialogue over the ceasefire—meticulously crafted to protect military personnel, civilians, and infrastructure—Hun Sen shifted focus to the border checkpoint closure. This closure, enforced unilaterally by Thailand, has sparked fervent debate among Cambodian social media users, despite a conspicuous silence from Cambodia’s political and military echelons.
Hun Sen emphasized the discrepancy in public narratives: "While Cambodian leaders exercise restraint, in Thailand, discourse spans all societal levels, vociferously defending the ongoing closure." In this light, Hun Sen articulated Cambodia's steadfast refusal to request the reopening of the border from Thailand, which remains closed by unilateral decision.
"Cambodia will not debase itself to solicit Thailand’s reversal," Hun Sen declared. "We stand resilient—even if kept closed for a century, Cambodia shall endure."
While expressing thanks to Thailand for the unintended boost to Cambodian self-reliance, Hun Sen lauded the nation’s collective turn to domestic products due to the import halt. This shift marks a pivotal reinforcement of economic sovereignty, fostering a self-sustaining market environment characterized by stability and minimal inflation—an economic testament to effective governance amidst adversity.
Further emphasizing international dimensions, Hun Sen urged Japan, a stakeholder vested in both nations, to redirect logistical requests concerning border trade to Thailand, noting Cambodia’s prior conciliation.
Finally, in a compelling call for national unity, Hun Sen appealed to citizens for patience and faith in the Royal Government’s diplomatic strategies. “We cannot end war with war,” he asserted, promoting peaceful resolution as the cornerstone of Cambodia's approach to international conflict.
This statement not only underscores Cambodia’s firm diplomatic posture but highlights its resilience and strategic economic recalibration, setting a sovereign precedent in regional geopolitics.
